November Numeracy Challenge

November Numeracy Challenge – 1st in Switzerland!

This November our primary school was extra busy in the area of Mathematics. An online program we use at ISSH called Mathletics held their annual November Numeracy Challenge. The challenge involves students from all around the world to compete and progress across a range of activities and live events. Grades 1 all the way to 5 took part in interclass challenges, inter school challenges and even worldwide knockout rounds. A great time was had by all and it was very impressive to see the progress over just one week of continuous live events. Our school placed 1st in Switzerland and 117th in the world! For the size of our school we should be very proud of our accomplishments, as more than 1000 schools worldwide participated! Here the students share their experience.

How does the event work?

“In the math challenge we try to get as many points as we can in a week and then compete against our class and the whole world.” Solomon Grade 5

What countries did you play against?

“I played against Australia, Switzerland and England.” Daxtyn Grade 5

How did you make it even for the younger students and older students to compete in the same game?

“The oldest give the youngest a headstart and so they get at least a 30 second head start, sometimes less.” Caterina Grade 5

What did you like most about the event?

“I liked playing against the other grades in the school.” Isla Grade 5

Shall we do it again next year? If so, how can you get ready?

“We can get ready by preparing ourselves and challenging ourselves between now and the next one. Yes, I think we should do it again.”

We hope the primary school enjoyed the event and look forward to seeing how this new learning transfers into our everyday math learning.
