Switzerland, a place known for its mountains, clocks, and chocolate but there’s so much more to discover. Growing up in Switzerland has been a wonderful experience as I have been able not only to meet great people from various nationalities but also since it’s a very diverse country.
Having lived for 3 years in the Saastal, I had the privilege of discovering how the traditional life of ‘Heidi’ in the mountains of Switzerland is as well as the ultimate Swiss feeling. From the beautiful little houses made of wood, decorated with flowers to the mountain trails or even the little Swiss flags everywhere.
What I really like about Switzerland? The silence. It is great to come home every day and just be able to sit in the garden and appreciate the quietness and nature. In contrast, in Portugal, it seems like the day never ends, as people talk loud until late and maybe it’s because the country benefits from sunshine until 22:00 o’clock. That probably explains the idiom ‘Until midnight people always arrive’. What is meant by it is that everyone always has an open door to receive friends, family members and to spend time with them whether it is by having a good meal, talking or watch a football match together until late in the evening.
About 8 years ago my family and I moved to Schaffhausen, where I was able to become a student at ISSH and to continue my studies. I remember that when I first arrived here, I was fascinated by the Rheinfall as it reminded me (even if this may sound a bit weird) of the sea in Portugal, it became a place where I found like a refuge or hideaway from all the stress from the school and even from the feeling of ‘saudade’ that only the Portuguese people know of.
Moreover, participating actively in various activities in Schaffhausen, such as being a ‘Ministrantin’ in the local church, has allowed me to be integrated into the community and to have a voice in organizing and participating in events as well as to get to know more closely the Swiss culture and customs. Furthermore, it is nice to see how the people are very welcoming, warm-hearted, and willing to show you the best of Switzerland even if it is by offering you a little ‘tour’ through the Altstadt.
As a teenager, an event that really got my attention was clearly the Stars in Town, as it was not only always held on the day of my birthday but also since many famous singers from Switzerland, its neighboring countries, and even from the United Kingdom have performed in the heart of Schaffhausen.
Furthermore, Switzerland is a great country to do a variety of activities whether it is radical sports or even just hikes through the mountains.
In essence, Switzerland is a great country to live in, due to the beautiful nature, the friendliness of the people and the calm atmosphere.
I‘m 18 years old and I live in Neunkirch.
