INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION

The International School of Schaffhausen offers education programmes in English and German to students of all grades from childcare to the International Baccalaureate. The international education is suited for every child irrespective of prior language knowledge thanks to individual support and development in both languages.

HOW IS BILINGUAL EDUCATION
IMPLEMENTED IN OUR SCHOOL?

Child Care Centre

Care is provided by trained educators in English, German and Swiss German. All children get to experience all three languages in the childcare centre environment. Upon request, parents can define a main language or main languages for their child. The carers will then ensure that they approach the child in this language and that the main carer for the child speaks to them in this language. The child will however also experience the other languages. This way the language learning happens in a very natural environment.

Early Years

Natural and early development of bilingualism through immersion happens at this level. Approximately 65 % of the activities and interactions between teachers and child will happen in English, approximately 35 % of the interactions and activities will be in German.  (learning through play, both languages as everyday languages). The English-speaking teachers will always communicate in English, whereas the German and Swiss-German teachers will communicate in German. This way the children will experience both languages in every-day situations.

Primary Years

For the German language lessons, the students are grouped into different levels and taught in small groups. Mother tongue German speakers are taught according to the Swiss and German curriculum. Our Units of Inquiry are mainly taught in English. 

Middle Years

For the German language lessons, the students are grouped into different levels and taught in small groups. Mother tongue German speakers are taught according to the Swiss and German curriculum. Our science and social studies curriculum is mainly taught in English.
