Primary Years

The all-day school in Schaffhausen

Welcome to the ISSH Primary Section. In our international primary school we aim to make every day of learning as joyful, inspirational and challenging as possible. We value the academic and social development of our students in equal measure and actively maintain a curriculum and culture that supports this.

FACTS ABOUT OUR PRIMARY SCHOOL

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

We follow the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), a curriculum framework designed for children in international schools who may later return to local systems. The PYP takes a holistic approach, nurturing hearts and minds and addressing social, physical, emotional, and cultural needs alongside academics.

LANGUAGE LEARNING

We see language as a means of communication, intellectual development and as an important part of understanding one’s own culture and the culture of others.

FOREST LEARNING

Practicing outdoor learning has many benefits and can involve a wide range of activities, from science experiments and art projects to physical games and storytelling. Our students are immersed in forest learning every week, rain or shine, experiencing the seasons and connecting with nature in all types of weather.

GLOBAL EDUCATION

Using six transdisciplinary themes, students learn globally relevant, challenging and significant concepts.

CROSS CURRICULAR LEARNING

The Learner Profile and Approaches to Learning, provide the dispositions and foundational skills for the development and demonstration of international-mindedness.

LEARNING SHOWCASES & EXHIBITION

Students demonstrate their understanding and skills in research, critical thinking and communication.

Our highly experienced and skilled international staff are well aware of the needs of students from diverse backgrounds and work closely with every family to meet these. We believe that it takes a team to help a child continue to achieve their potential and encourage parents to get involved. This could be assisting on school trips, hearing readers in class, leading presentations or simply taking an interest in what has been sent for homework. Both students and parents build life-long friendships whilst at our school, as ISSH is at the heart of the international community in Schaffhausen.
