Assessment

Externally moderated exams across the globe

Assessment of the IB Diploma Programme comprises of an internal and external component.

Internal assessment

Courses are regularly assessed internally during the 2-year curriculum of the Diploma Programme. Assessment methods include: oral work in languages, fieldwork in geography, laboratory work in the sciences and investigations in mathematics. Internal assessments are checked by external examiners and normally contribute between 20 and 30 per cent of the total mark.

External assessment

External examinations form the basis of the assessment for most subjects. Diploma students in all IB schools take the same examinations, which are delivered to schools by the IB organization. Students sit the external examinations at the school, after which the examination papers are mailed back to an IB scanning centre which distributes them to examiners for marking. This ensures that all students are assessed according to the same standards.

The external exams may consist of essays, structured problems, short-response questions, data-response questions, text-response questions, case-study questions and multiple-choice questions (limited use of these). The external examinations contribute between 70 and 80 percent of the total mark.

The grading system

The grading system is criterion-based, which means that results are determined by individual performance against set standards. Validity, reliability and fairness are the watchwords of the Diploma Program’s assessment strategy. For detailed information regarding assessment, see our current Assessment Policy.
