Student Services in Primary

Language and support services for primary school students

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

At ISSH we believe in an inclusive programme, which means that generally students are placed in the same grade as other students of their age. Students with little or no English are required to attend EAL-intense classes. EAL is taught in small groups or one-to-one. Classes are scheduled as part of the regular school day. They participate 4 times a week in special  EAL lessons with an EAL specialist. The EAL teacher, the class teacher and the subject specialists cooperate closely to ensure maximum support for the student. In addition, we offer special skills development courses, or Extra English, outside of the timetable to support students who are in the mainstream courses but still need to further develop their language skills.

German as an additional language (GAL)

Students who arrive with little or no German are offered GAL. GAL is taught in small groups or one-to-one. Classes occur simultaneously with mainstream German classes. Progress is monitored and students join the mainstream classes when they are ready to be transferred.

Mother Tongue Languages

Many students have proficiency in languages other than those offered. We believe that the continued development of mother tongue (and other languages that students are proficient in) is important and beneficial to learners. We therefore make every effort to support students by investigating resources, possibly teachers and opportunities to help the student continue to develop in these languages.

Learning Support

ISSH has a Learning Support Coordinator who liaises with teachers, parents and students in order to make recommendations regarding the best support for students with particular learning needs. ISSH provides an in-school learning support service for students with learning difficulties or other special needs. These one-to-one lessons take place during the school day and are provided at an extra cost. If a student requires additional support including, but not limited to, external assessments, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, psychological support, a personal assistant or tutor, ISSH assists the parents to find specialists and organise such services. When needed, Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) are implemented with the aim to optimize the student’s learning and school experience.
